Oh, I see. This is a problem; how can we avoid this in the future? I think there is no legitimate reason an investee would try to keep private investment secret. We should seek to have all private investment announced alongside the public investment. Maybe they would want to keep the names private, but the amount of private funding should be known, as it increases the risk of a scam and the amount of isk lost if it is a scam. A continuous audit of Curzon would also have revealed this, although that could be circumvented as well by having the private investors send isk to an unaudited alt with some additional social engineering.
Classic scammer/con man trick. Chat in private to hide from the public. I've seen several "scams" like this in just the last couple months.

Really? Which scams were those? I know there are frequently loan requests where the investee asks potential investors to contact him in-game. However, I have not seen a case where the investor is asked to keep the investment secret.
Riethe did one just recently. Then there was Davramm, but that can't officially be called a scam until he actually runs away with money, if he makes another attempt. Then this one. There was a lame one that was a one-line attempt that didn't go through. Yih's scam touched on it, but not really.
The fact of the matter is, there is no reason why you should need an in-game chat for a public bond offering. There's nothing that can be said in-game that can't be said in public on the forums. The only reason to do so, really, is to gain your confidence without having others see and/or pick apart issues.
The "con" in con man is for "confidence".
EDIT: I remember another one where a guy tried twice here and was spamming in local for a loan. He could have been legit, but wanted to convo you to sell you on his great business plan.
EDIT2: And it's not necessarily about the investor being asked to keep a secret, just words to gain his confidence out of the public eye.

When normal people get bored, they tend to quit, not steal and compromise their integrity, assuming from your posts that you feel you are normally a man of integrity.

Originally by: Hippopotamus Rex I don't get the social engineering label here. All he did was lie/steal.
Does "Social Engineering" = lying, to self-important nerds now?
Hey guys, I drive a Pontiac Grand Am. Am I telling the truth? Or did I just socially engineer your asses?
Social engineering is the act of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. While similar to a confidence trick or simple fraud, the term typically applies to trickery or deception for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or computer system access; in most cases the attacker never comes face-to-face with the victim.
From wikipedia
So, sounds like "social engineering" is a fancy word for conning someone, so yes, essentially just lying and stealing, though some scams are more involved. The TV show Lost had some great episodes about this.
